I recently had a chance to try out Hello Fresh so I thought I’d give an honest review & maybe a treat too.
Here are the 3 meals they sent me in the first week.
First up: Ground Beef & Guacamole Tacos
8 ounce Ground Beef
6 Flour Tortilla
1 Red Bell Pepper
1 teaspoon Southwest Blend Spice
1 Red Bell Pepper
This recipe I have to say, I was a bit skeptical at first because I already do make fantastic tacos that my buddy taught me awhile back. But to be honest, this was a really nice twist because usually I will use a ground turkey for my tacos. I also have never used radishes before in tacos so that was a nice variation. I think what made this recipe so different for me was the red bell peppers which are sautéed & cooked to perfection. You can’t see it but the guacamole is layered on the bottom underneath the beef. They only gave me one avocado for the guacamole & I’d suggest maybe 2 considering this is supposed to be for 2 people. I did get 6 tacos out of the deal even though you only see two pictured. The soft taco flour tortillas were very tasty & didn’t have the after taste like many store-bought do.
Another thing I loved about this recipe were the scallions! I don’t know I’ve always loved onions & especially these type are so great because they have that crunch to them. Now, many of you may notice that I did cheat & added shredded “chedda” so that is one thing this recipe did not include. Hey, what can I say…I’s gotsa haves me chedda!
I give this recipe an 8 out of 10!
Second up: Shrimp & Cheddar Grits
10 ounce Shrimp
4 ounce Collard Greens
4 ounce Grape Tomatoes
1 teaspoon Chili Flakes
2 clove Garlic
0.5 cup Grits
1 box 2% Reduced Fat Milk
0.5 cup Cheddar Cheese
1 tablespoon Vegetable Oil
0.5 tablespoon Butter
Okay, so if you love seafood like I do, I was super excited to see this one in the box! Then, I got really disappointed & skeptical again when I saw “collard greens”. Ugh! I thought to myself, those things are tough & I can never cook them right. I’ve had them before & they were anything BUT tender! I decided to not jump to any conclusions & make sure to follow the directions. “Give it a chance & you never know, you may be surprised.”
Well, I have to say…once again I was very wrong about this one! If you follow the recipe, you just saute up the collard greens & man they are still crunchy but tender at the same time. The tomatoes which are lightly sautéed until blistered, add such a nice acidity to it all. I will say that I did screw up the grits by forgetting about them on the burner so I had a nice burnt layer on the bottom of my pan! Oh well, they were still good! (next time I’ll add some butter to the mix to prevent sticking) The shrimp they sent me were so fresh, I mean honestly it was like restaurant quality & yes I can tell if they were previously frozen, no they were definitely not. Actually, that is another reason I never buy frozen shrimp, they’re disgusting to me. I can tolerate frozen fish but not shrimp.
I give this recipe a 9 out of 10!
12 ounce Chicken Breast
1 thumb Ginger
2 clove Garlic
0.5 ounce Soy Sauce
1 Chicken Stock Concentrate
1 ounce Honey
2 tablespoon White Wine Vinegar
8 ounce Snow Peas
0.5 cup Jasmine Rice
Last up I chose to cook this one. As we all have had tons of chicken recipes over the years, I thought to myself how was this one going to be any different? Answer: it’s that SWEET SWEET honey baby!
This is a really knock it out of the park combination. Honestly, it was so dang good, I was licking the plate! This tastes like an Asian inspired meal with the soy and ginger you add to it. I was so pleased with the fresh ginger & garlic that I minced up, it felt like I was eating medicine it was so good. The chicken they sent was very fresh & tender. No marinating required! (can’t say that about the chicken I buy in the grocery store) And again, it was not frozen, just super cold in the box. Snowpeas? I freakin’ love snowpeas! They were crunchy yet chewy on the inside. The best rice in the world (I think) was included here which is jasmine rice. It is the only kind of white rice I ever buy.
When you take a bite out of this one, you get the sweet honey glaze with the minced ginger & garlic. I’m telling you if you like this type of food, it melts in your mouth!

I think the major difference with Hello Fresh is that the quality of the ingredients that you get, are very good! I actually think they are better quality than many traditional grocery chains! (which is quite sad at the same time) Also, I would like to point out that the good thing is the spices were good but not overpowering, & the ingredients they do supply don’t have a bunch of MSG, sodium or junk in them. The recipes are all created by real chefs, go figure eh? That’s why they are all so well balanced with salt, sweetness, & acidity.
Q: Why would anyone buy a recipe and food delivery subscription?
A: It’s not that I can’t find recipes, or shop…it’s that I HATE doing both of those! Honestly, I have gotten in such a rut by not having time, or the will to do those things. So, if you’re like me, you should definitely try Hello Fresh. Then, on the other end of that is yeah you could go out to a restaurant but most of the time you’re gonna spend a lot more money & you don’t know what they’re putting in it! I can tell you I can’t even eat at most major chains because of the sodium (And I love salt!) or the other garbage in their prepackaged frozen meals they serve. (Y’all restaurants know who you are) I mean, one of my favorite meals named cajun chicken pasta has 4000mg of salt in it! Are you kidding me? No wonder I feel like I’m gonna die after I eat it. Also, have you ever looked up recipes, tried them, & they didn’t come out like you thought?! Exactly…I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched the infamous Food Network & cooked something they showed me that was so simple on TV, & yet nobody in my household could replicate it! These meals from Hello Fresh are actually simple to make, & they come out very good! If I can make them, anyone can, and I’m definitely no chef.
